Surving the economical slow down

Tips and Ideas to help you save money

Everyone is now feeling a pinch with money these days.  I grew up in a big family and learned many ideas from my mom, I still use today.  Unfortunatley, many of us did not grow up as I , and didn't learn these little tips that help loosen some of that money.

Daily changes you can make that won't kill you.

#1  If you have young children in diapers CHANGE TO CLOTH
This not only saves you so much money , but it is healthier for your     children ( Click to read how it saves you)

#2 How much do you spend in paper Products?

Napkins ?  Replace these with cloth napkins. These not only are nicer to use but you are doing a load of towels everyday so throw them in with all the towels.   (best place to get these is to go to your local thrift store or make up some yourself. Don't worry about using the fancy lace ones , Why not ..... So what if they do not match.... I keep a small pretty basket on the table and when I am done folding these I keep them here and just keep replenishing them as they are used.  ( bad thing is they do not work well camping but we have to allow for some time off)

Paper towels -  Ok if you have a pet problem ( I will forgive you , but if you have news paper that works well to ) But if you use these daily ,just for spills and such, there is money to be saved!!!  My solution to this is to spend some money at Walmart on a couple packages of nice terry dish towels ( not fancy) ,these are your new paper towels . Teach the kids to use these instead. Keep them in a plastic tube fit to hold a lot ( as kids tend to knock down your stack and this holds it) ( And I mean stack , for us a family of 8 kids spilling , we go through 20 of these or more a day. I wash towels every day . These go through with the napkins and the towels.

Paper Plates :  Ok , big money here ... How many of these do you use each day.  A little bit of work doesn't hurt.

Paper cups - This is silly... just get a bunch of cups with different colors or each childs name on it. This is used all day .... Until dinner Then they are washed fresh for morning.

Sanitary Napkins - yes for woman. We have 4 girls in this house that are at that age ( although me having 8 kids , I saved on this alittle, ha ha)  These are not as hard as you think ..... I would be spending so much on just that! Each one to his own as I say.... (for cleaning them) (Cleaning instructions click here)   I make these and sell them here if you do not want to make them... They last for quite a while . Yes they can travel with you short term . I suppose a long term trip without access to a washer would be hard but the time your at home, is just throwing money away! The toxins in disposable diapers are in the sanitary napkins as well , this is less toxic for you and your girls.

Plastic silverware - Don't even go there (unless you are having a party and I rewash these and save them for the next party) I put a sign and a plastic box by the garbage and say Place THESE Here !!!  Saves MUCH!!!

So Now we are to the toliet paper ..... No that is ok, I have no suggestions for that.

#3  Cleaning Products ( Oh this is a biggy)

Most comercial cleaning product are just over priced.  You can make most of this stuff at home with a $.99 spray bottle or 2 and a bucket.

1.) Regular spray ( replace fantastic) - Amonia 1/2c. sudsy - a spray bottle fill with hot water and shake (after you put the lid on) Mark it with a marker.

2.) Window Washer - This is 1 cup acohol and 1/2 c. amonia ( cear if you can find it) add the rest water ( to your spray bottle)

3.) Scouring powder -  Use baking soda - this is also not harmful to the
enviorment and is safe to use without gloves . 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup of borax , 1 cup of salt- place in air tight lidded container with a scooper and use as needed.

4.) Automatic dishwashing Detergent - use instead 2 cups of borax 2 cups of washing soada (available in the laundry saop department) and 1 old icecream container with a lid. Add 2 TBS to each load.

5.) Dishwashing soap - Not only can be toxic to your hands if you do not use gloves but is expensive. Instead try using this - 1/4 cup of soap flakes, 1 1/2 cup of hot water, 1/4 cup of glycerin and 1/2 teasp. of lemon oil, put this into your old container of dish soap when it is empty , keep refilling when needed.

6.) Disinfectant bathroom spray - this works well but cost sooo much less - 2 Teaspoons of borax, 1/2 tsp. washing soda, 2 TBS of lemon juice,4 TBS white vinegar, 3 cups of very hot water , 1 cleaning spray bottle labeled.

7.)Toliet cleaner (basic ) -  this is non toxic and works well. 1 cup of Borax sprinkled around the toliet, then add in dribbles 1/2 cup of white vinegar, if you have time leave it undisturbed for 3 hours before scrubbing. Then scrub and flush ( works well to do overnight)

8.) Non Toxic rust remover -  These comercial products are very toxic- try using this , 1 lime (sometimes 2 if really bad) 1 /4 cup of salt. Squeeze lime over rust spots, sprinkle salt over it and let it sit for 3-4 hours. Using a nylon scrubber scrub off mixture and rise. This truely works.

9.) Drain Opener - This is great - comercial prdocuts can be very toxic, My grandmother always did this first. She boiled a huge pot of hot water and packed the drain with baking soda and 1/2 cup of white vinegar , covered drain for 10 minutes then flushed it out with the boiled hot water.

#4.) Lunch Meat - Are you still using the ready made and cut up lunch meat? On top of eatting all of the nitrates you are spending $4.00 or more a pound on treated meat. How much is chicken per pound?? How about a roast per pound?? I can tell you it is much cheaper!!   I uaually buy as it is on sale and cook up extra. ( For exsample buy a turkey at $.89 pound when on sale) cook it up serve some for dinner and freeze the rest in zip lock packages cut up for sandwiches. This is refrozen and used as needed) Remove them into the fridge the day before.

#5 )Carry your own lunch to work

#6 ) Carry coffee , drinks for children evey time you go somewhere - Ok , just think about this, how often are you out and you get thirsty?? The kids are thirsty, You buy a drink, maybe 2.   Carry a small jug ( iced if you want) fill it with what ever , I use  tea bags and water) Always have a small stash of paper ( the cheapest available) cups in the car. When I know we are truley going to be out long I carry a bag of regular cups.(rewash it all when I get home) Each kid has a name on it.   I can even refill this jug at most outing places. ( if it is not city water) but think of all the city water you drinking from all the made drinks you get.

#7 ) Bottled water, -  This is like above. If you have city water in your home , consider a filter system . Bottled water is expensive and also even if it is good quality water , you are still drinking out of toxic plastic container. Jugs now days can be lined in glass which is safer to use.

#8)  Hanging your laundry -  Yes this is not all that hard . I do it . I save big all summer long. We hang everything!!    Please check my tips for hanging laundry .

#9 ) Make your own everything -  Are you home? Even if you work you can still do this.  Making your own bread is so much better for your family.  I make everything from scratch. Most bought food is filled with preservitives that are very harmful to you and your family. I can't even read most of the ingredients in them.
Breads , buns , cornbreads, cakes, pizza, dinners, all these can be made so easily and less expensive. The cost of ready made food is extreme.
Snacks for kids can be made in bulk and frozen ( kids are lazy and won't go into the freezer and get them out.) You make them available as you need them.   Children eat what is there. If chips are available , that is lunch. You probobly do it too. Always have real food cooked and available. ( cook extra for meals)   Make a big batch of cookies, bread, pancakes corn bread, and freeze it all .   One day , gives you 2 or 3 weeks.
Popcorn replaces chips and pretzels . Don't even buy them !! Crakers are so easily made  healthier and you can freeze these ....( And these snacks rot your childrens teeth and are full of empty calaries!!  )

Health wise you can save money too!!!
Buy COD LIVER OIL - give this to all in the family at dinner. 1 teaspoon for each 50 Lbs ( babies get 1 teaspoon)  - this will save you headaches of children being sick, being whinny, lowers your cholestrol, ups you immune system, protects you from skin cancer , helps reduce bone fracture in children when they fall ( no paying for broken bones)  reduces fat, helps calm children, feeds your hormones... I can go on and on.  This all saves you money with medical expensese.

Feed your family right - as above make everything!!

give vitamin c in high levels to all in family.

Make your own herbal medicine ( I can teach you )

I can go on and on on this section. I will soon write up a section for this by itself. This is just the basics.

We will add more from time to time.
